Ancient Greek Competition 2024:
Microphilosophical dialogs in Acient Greek
The Hellenikon Idyllion, also known as the Garden of the Muses, is a musical and cultural meeting place on the Gulf of Corinth that aims to promote the ancient Greek language as well as the fine arts.
The goal
With the competition for 2024, we continue to pursue the goal of promoting the classical Greek language as well as the noble art of philosophizing among young people. Our hope is that we can contribute to the good life and joy. We want school knowledge of Greek to be used to creatively shape philosophical dialogues.
The challenge
Work as Greek philosophers in groups of up to 7 people. Take an important, difficult, funny or crazy question as a starting point and design a philosophical dialogue based on the great example of Plato! Bring this dialogue to the stage and record it as a video (video duration about 5-10 minutes)! The pronunciation can be either Erasmian or Modern Greek.
The prize of victory
All dialogues are evaluated by our select jury and honored with certificates. The group that wins first prize receives one week of free accommodation in our musical and cultural meeting place. Second prize winners will receive a full four days of free accommodation. The teachers of the winning group also win, even if they do not appear in the dialogue - which of course they can do! Important: Multiple first and second prizes can be awarded! It is possible to invite Greek students and teachers to a joint festive meal after the performance of your dialogue, thereby establishing valuable intercultural contacts.
Ideas
- You can enhance your dialogue with a musical contribution. You can do this either before, during or after your dialogue. The only important thing is that the music doesn't make the dialogue incomprehensible, but rather highlights it.
- You can use, for example, a quote from a Greek philosopher or the verses of an ancient poet as the starting point for your dialogue. But a modern question about the challenges of our time can be just as exciting!
- for inspiration Take a look at the excerpt from this year's event, where the students of the Benedictine High School Ettal, led by Roland Jurgeleit, discussed the topic "How should one live? - πῶς βιωτέον;" philosophize! See link below.
Conditions
- the timely delivery of the video and a text file containing the text in ancient Greek and in your native language.
- Permission to upload the video to YouTube and other social media. We will then add subtitles to the video in ancient Greek and English.
Deadlines
- If you are interested in taking part in this competition, we would be pleased if you let us know by email to info@idyllion.eu by January 20, 2024
- Video including the text basis must be sent to us electronically before March 23, 2024
- The assessment of the dialogues including the announcement of the first and second prizes will take place by April 15, 2024 at the latest.
Evaluation
An international jury will evaluate your contributions:
- Stefano Pagliaroli, Professor of Italian Philology and Greek and Latin Humanistic Philology at the University of Verona, Italy,
- Federico Aurora, academic librarian for classical studies at the University of Oslo, Norway,
- Thomas Andersen, classical philologist, philosopher, artist and former high school teacher from Norway,
- Julia Diamantopoulou, classical philologist and poet from Greece,
- Irene Mavropoulou, classical philologist, founder and director of the Fronein Ancient Greek School and doctor of educational sciences from Greece
- Roland Jurgeleit, classical philologist, philosopher and former high school teacher from Germany, chairman of the Timaios Society e.V.
- the president of the jury, Andreas Drekis, founder and director of the Hellenikon Idyllions and sponsor of this multi-year competition and the seminar "Speaking Ancient Greek with one another and philosophizing today!", which has been taking place for 32 years.
Possible partial financing
If you have intercultural contact with students from Greece, you may be able to apply for financial support from the state through a special program.
